  • Welcome to Abilene!
buffalo2007-07-03-1183487072.jpgWelcome to Abilene! We’re glad you’ve taken the time to visit, or maybe you’re planning on sticking around for a while. Either way, we’re glad you’ve come and we’ve created this area to make your stay a little easier. But first, here’s a little introduction to our city.

Abilene got its start in 1880 when ranchers and businessmen met with the Texas and Pacific Railroad and agreed to have the railroad bypass Buffalo Gap and travel through the northern part of Taylor County. A new town would be built along the tracks and would become the county seat in place of Buffalo Gap. The name Abilene was suggested after a Kansas cattle town, and so Abilene was established in March of 1881 upon the completion of the railroad through the area.

Abilene is located at nearly the geographic center of Texas, just about 180 miles west of the Dallas/Ft.Worth area. With a rich heritage and history, Abilene contains many attractions and events that make it appealing to both resident and visitor alike. If it’s outdoor recreation you want, look no further than the 26 parks, four public golf courses, and football games in nearby Shotwell Stadium. If you want to stay inside, then visit one of Abilene’s performing arts venues, go shopping at the mall, or check out one of the many historical attractions around town. Whatever you’re looking for, chances are we’ve got it.
