  • BCGR - ACU Green (Part 4)
Reported by: Chris Whited, KRBC News

    Thursday, Mar 19, 2009 @10:47am CDT

In this edition of the Big Country Green Report we continue our look at green efforts on the Abilene Christian University campus. We have more on several of the recycling programs making a difference for the ACU community. The ACU mission when it comes to green efforts is striving to live and work sustainable as an expression of caring for people, stewarding gifts and celebrating god's creation through several recycling programs.

Anthony Williams, the ACU Chief Auxillary Services Officer told KRBC News "we've been very, very aggressive. Three years go we switched to recycled paper so all of our paper we distribute to different departments is 30% recycled paper. In addition to that we've installed a shredding system." He says the university recycles about 800 cartons of the shredded paper from various offices, shreds it and takes it to the city's recycling center.

The university is also taking efforts to keep batteries out of area landfills. "One thing I'm really proud about is our battery program. We collected 3000 batteries and worked out an arrangement with interstate where instead of going to the land then those batteries go on and are recycled" explained Williams.

The university also encourages purchasing recycled materials for classroom use. One of the most unique and talked about items is recycled paper, but it's not your typical paper as it is made out of recycled elephant droppings. "Not only is green being responsible it's fun. So we do have elephant poo paper products and would love all of Abilene to purchase some of those items if they choose too. Not only that we try ti make decisions in a business sense. What governs us is not dollars and cents, it's really our mission" according to Williams.
