Reported by: Sam Nichols Friday, Sep 4, 2009 @10:54pm CDT This weekend marks the first full weekend of dove hunting in Texas.
The Big Country is always flooded with enthusiastic hunters ready to take on the challenge of dove hunting. Dove hunting has a high rate of accidents. Some rules to follow include using a 45-degree angle as your safe zone of fire. Knowing the effective shooting range of your shotgun is also essential for a successful hunt. Approximately 30 yards is generally a good rule of thumb for the range of a dove hunting shotgun. If you use to many shells, it is probably because you are shooting out of range. One tip is if you can see the specific colors on the dove, then they are within 25 yards. Dove hunting is big business to communities in the Big Country, as thousands of dollars are poured into the local economy each year during dove season. |
