Reported by: Chris Whited, KRBC News Thursday, Oct 8, 2009 @10:30pm CDT For the next few days, Solid Waste Services and Keep Abilene Beautiful are hosting the annual Fall Clean & Tire Amnesty Days at the Abilene Environment Recycling Center. Residents can drop off their trash and unwanted items all at one location.
Manager Leonard Neith told KRBC News that the "Spring Clean is always the high number one because we've always been taught to spring clean you know and brought up that way. We're trying to break the habit and get off the spring clean deal to where it's twice a year and that makes it easier on everyone."
Recycling center staff will separate the recyclable and non-recyclable items. The center will take anything from clothing to old furniture to old appliances. There are some items that do have some restrictions, such as the used tires brought by the center. "Eight tires per household that are off the rim, if they're on the rims then there is a charge for them. [We'll take] anything to a light truck tire," explained Neith. Last fall nearly 1100 vehicles dropped off items for the three day event. The center collected over 140 tons of trash, nearly600 computers, 700 gallons of paint, and about 1500 tires. "We just ask everyone to remember they have to help unload it. We only have a limited amount of help," Neith told KRBC. The Abilene Environmental Recycling Center is located at 2209 Oak St. The event is happening Thursday, Friday and Saturday, October 8 - 10. Hours of operation are from 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. For safety reasons, special traffic conditions will be set up on Saturday, October 10 when Oak Street will become a one way street entering from South 25th.
Acceptable items include everything from clothes and computers to old furniture and appliances. Materials that will not be accepted are items from major remodeling projects, roofing materials, concrete, stones and dirt. Fencing will be taken but the participants will have to off load their own materials. At this year’s Fall Clean, Abilene residents may bring in up to eight (8) passenger tires without rims, free of charge with proof of residency (current water bill). Passenger tires with rims have an additional $3.00 service fee per tire. Truck tires without rims are $6.00, with rims $8.00. Ag tires will be accepted without rims only with a $35.00 per tire service fee. No commercial or business tires will be accepted.
