Reported by: Michelle Ashworth Wednesday, Nov 4, 2009 @05:15pm CST The town of Merkel is facing yet another water problem, residents have been without water since yesterday afternoon and so Merkel ISD canceled classes for the day.
Merkel Middle School student Michael Scott was able to enjoy a day in the sun and stayed as far away from the classroom as he could today. "I'm about to go to the library and get on the internet and check my myspace," said Scott. Checking his MySpace all afternoon because Merkel ISD was forced to cancel school because the city has been without water since yesterday afternoon. Apparently a 14-inch main line broke, the city says it's an old line that's caused Merkel several water problems this year. "We're in the process we have a new water line that's going to replace the line that actually broke and while the system was down we needed to reconnect that line to the original old line," said City Manager Kevin Hagan. Water notices are nothing new the the town of Merkel. They've had several boil water notices already this year. MISD Superintendent, Bill Hood, says there's just no way to have classes when you don't have any water to run the school. "We've got an issue of not being able to wash your hands in the restroom, cooking with the cafeterias. There's just a lot of factors that you can't overcome," added Hood. The city says the water notice will be in effect until tomorrow. Merkel has at least 2 days built into their schedule for emergencies like this, no word yet if they'll have to make up the missed day at the end of the year. |
