  • Flu Overload is Bugging Out People in the Big Country
    Reported by: Michelle Ashworth

The flu, H1N1, swine flu, pandemic...these are words lots of people have been hearing a lot of lately.

"Its overrated, it's overblown, (and) its not that big of a deal," said Benjamin Stephens.

President Obama has declared it a National State of Emergency and the CDC is calling H1N1 a pandemic. However local medical experts are saying while the flu should be taken seriously, it's nothing to be alarmed about.

"I think there is some widespread panic, but I don't think this is the 1918 that's going to kill many people, but we will in our lifetime have a flu epidemic that will kill many people. This is just not it," according to Dr. Darron Atwood from Coleman Medical Center.

Stephens says he knows first hand what the H1N1 virus is like. "When the doctors said that there's a 98% chance I had it, I started to freak out but then I got back to my apartment and its just like the regular flu."

Stephens decided not to freak out and instead just waited for his flu to be over, but he's not alone is being part of the growing group of H1N1 patients. The flu can come and go in a matter of days, for others it has been deadly. Some Big Country doctors say the widespread flu has increased ER traffic 100% in the last few weeks.

"We're very busy at this time, its very difficult to get everyone in, it is ok, we have treated some people at home who we know for sure have the flu by their symptoms, we have treated them at home just to try to prevent them from coming here and spreading it to the public," said Atwood.

Having the swine flu, regular flu, or just a cold is something a lot of people seem to want to stop hearing others complain about.

"It's really really getting kinda old, like you hear about it almost everyday. There's someone 'oh I think I have swine flu, I think I might have swine flu," like it's just the flu, take some Thermaflu and you'll be fine," said Chelsea Jones.
