Reported by: Brittany Pelletz Wednesday, Nov 4, 2009 @06:56pm CST After the Park and Recreation Board approved the sale of alcohol at fund-raising events held at Abilene's Grover Nelson Park, residents are speaking up.
"I don't have any problem with it at all. I think everybody that is over there is a grown-adult," says Bill Poor, a resident who lives behind Nelson Park. Some residents say that allowing alcohol at the park will tighten up the security, making it safer. "I'm sure that there's a constable or a sheriff that takes a patrol around there," adds Poor. But one resident says that it is going to be tough to regulate alcohol sales, and could cause some problems. "It's hard to say how well the city would actually monitor what's being sold and if people would have arm bands for age purposes, and to make sure that they're not selling too much to one particular person," says Shelly Roggendorff, a concerned parent living in the neighborhood behind the park. Many residents say it is a perk to have a park right in your backyard, but now there are some concerns about alcohol being sold here. "I don't have too much of a problem, but if they're selling it at all the ball games, and at everything that they do then I could see it definitely turning into a problem, especially being close to the park and where the kids are," says Shelly. And while alcohol may have been prohibited, Shelly says she saw alcohol there long before it was permitted. "We have seen beer cans. So people are drinking out there already, but we have definitely seen some litter and glass. So I'm always having to make sure that the kids are wearing their shoes," adds Shelly. The people who live near Nelson Park have no plans to move, and although the decision is not final they are preparing. |
