  • No Cellphone In School Zones Enforced By PD
    Reported by: Maria Oliver

    Wednesday, Nov 4, 2009 @10:30pm CST

"Let me see your driver's license and insurance please, the reason I am stopping you is for use of the cellphone in the school zone," said Officer Loren Adlesperger after pulling over a driver using her cellphone in a school zone.

The new "No Cellphone Use," in school zone law took into affect on September 1 and since then police have been warning drivers to stay off their cellphones in school zones.

"Cellphone use is just another task that a person should not be doing especially in a school zone, they need to be focusing on the road and keeping the children safe," said Adlesperger.

Despite warning signs,  some just are not paying attention.

"I am getting pulled over by a cop for using my phone in a school zone," said one driver to the person she was talking to on her cellphone as she was pulled over at College Heights Elementary

Once those lights are blinking in a school zone Officer Adlesperger says stay off your cellphone and watch your speed.

"After school, they want to get out of there, they don't want to have to worry about cars this that and they other, a child will run out in the street with out thinking, we've had kids hit going to school, we've had traffic accidents, where kids almost got hit after school , it's just not a good idea to speed in a school zone," said Adlesperger.

Officer ADlesperger adds, school zones need to be safe zones, but children aren't always paying attention.

"Children, regardless of their age, don't always pay attention and then step out in traffic and we need the motorist to be aware for the kids sake. We don't want another child to be hit and killed in a school zone," said officer
"reason i stopped you is talking on that cellphone in a school zone,"said Adlesperger.

Abilene PD will no longer warn drivers when speeding or talking on their cellphones during school zone hours.. instead you can face a citation with a fee up to $200.
