Reported by: Angela Taylor Wednesday, Nov 4, 2009 @11:02pm CST We're all looking to cut cash when we buy food. Sometimes, that means turning to store brands.
But some shoppers share a stigma that store brands don't taste as good as the name brand stuff, so we're putting your favorite food items to the test! It's not hard for grocery bills to add up, but you can cut those bills significantly, according to food expert Todd Marks. "You can save a lot of money," Marks said. "You can save upwards of 35% on average by switching from a national brand to its store brand counterpart." Saving money with store brands may sound good, but will making the switch taste good? We got together with 2 families who said they prefer brand names. We took ten brand name foods, everything from ketchup to cookies, and put them up against their store brand counterparts from Target. The families didn't know which food was which. They made their way through peanut butter and crackers and ketchup and chicken nuggets to decide if they liked "A" or "B" better. After more food samples, it was time for the results. The store brand won when it came to the marshmellow treats and cereal. The brand name won for the chips, chicken nuggets and ketchup. For items like the peanut butter and popcorn, a majority thought they were the same. Many of the families said the look of their shopping carts and grocery bills will be changing. They determined that it was sometimes hard to find a clear cut winner, so they will go with price. Last year, store brand products accounted for $81 billion in sales. |
