Paul Walker, Director of the Eagle Band, looked on tonight with pride. Not just because of their performance, but more because of their act of love. "They're doing that for you, man," Walker shouted to Isiah Flores.
Isiah was hit by a truck in July, while he has since gotten better, his injuries were serious. During Isaiah's recovery process, Ruben Cadena, a Drum Major and family friend of the Flores', came up with an idea to raise money to help Isiah. "Mr. Walker asked us, this summer, if we were interested in doing any service projects, and this happened a week or two after. It just seemed to fit in place," says the Drum Major.
So Ruben got the Abilene High band behind it, and they did the rest. "When we threw it to the kids, they just loved the idea. They were generous, and they riaised almost $300," says Walker.
The leaders of the band, took the money and bought Isiah a brand new bike, helmet, and other sports equipment. Of course, the band was sure to add a recorder, saying they want to see him marching in ten years.
Though the giving didn't stop there, during half-time, the band pulled Isiah out on the field to help direct the show. Walker says he hopes this is a chance to say, "Way to go, Isiah," adding, "It's been really hard and he's really persevered a lot. We're just super proud of him."
As for the gifts, Isiah loved them, and his mom looked on through teary eyes. Making this night special, not just for the Eagles, but also for Isiah and his family.
"I hope the Flores family is blessed by them [the band] because I certainly am," says Walker.
"It was very emotional, just to see him directing the band, having fun and that's what brings us laughter and joy to our lives," says Mike Flores, Isiah's dad.
While Thursday night was about Isiah, the driver of the truck is still unaccounted for, if you have any information about this hit and run, you are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 676-TIPS.
