Reported by: News Desk Friday, Nov 27, 2009 @10:44pm CST It happened around 6 a.m. The driver swerved to avoid hitting a dog. The truck was driving down South Clack near Las Brisas apartments. The driver escaped without injury, but his truck was severely damaged. A towing company was on the scene to pull the truck from the creek using a crane. That portion of South Clack was closed for some time. "It's fortunate. He didn't have any kind of damages or anything on him, so he was a little shaken up. It was pretty traumatic. He had to climb out of there I imagine," said Officer Roger Romero with the Abilene Police Department. The truck was carrying ice cream and frozen pizzas. Much of that food was donated to local charities which was an unexpected treat for some of Abilene's homeless. The company that owns the truck donated over 1,000 frozen pizzas and ice cream to the Abilene Salvation Army. They were glad to hand out the goods to people in need. The day after Thanksgiving is one of the busiest days for organizations like this and today's donation was greatly appreciated. "It's a treat for people who can't but these kinds of things," said Major James Parrish with the Salvation Army. The salvation army expects to feed over 1,200 families throughout the holiday season. |
