  • Fort Hood soldiers struggle to regain a sense of normal...

    Friday, Nov 6, 2009 @10:42pm CST

Soldiers go about their lives from building to building. And stand around tanks talking as life at Fort Hood looks like its back to normal.

But when the parking lot looks like a graveyard for TV satellite trucks it's anything but normal.

It's a day of mourning at Fort Hood. Flags at half staff in remembrance of 13 people gunned down allegedly by Major Hasan.

Friday afternoon at exactly 1:34, the moment the shooting spree began on Thursday, there was a moment of silence.

Private Marquest Smith was on the front lines of this shocking shooting. He says he raced to rescue about five victims, dragging them back to his truck. “As I was running out the door I could hear rounds flying past me hitting the wall,” said Private Smith.

Killeen is a military town that supports the troops and feels their pain. Folks are praying for Fort hood, and grieving for the dead.

But for Major Hasan, the suspected shooter who is reportedly in a coma and on a ventilator at the Brooke Army Medical Center, the soldiers at Fort Hood wonder how one of their own could have turned on them.
