Reported by: Steve Abel, Better Business Bureau Wednesday, Dec 24, 2008 @07:25pm CST ![]() The Better Business Bureau has noticed a trend in the recent rise of the purchasing of both Satellite and Cable programming. There are a few things which customers are being advised to look for when purchasing and installing these programs. Cable Cable channels are usually sold in “Packs,” or groups of channels. The cheapest usually consists of limited basic channels including local programming. Customers must pay additional fees to add another pack of channels. Customers should also consult their cable provider concerning any special channels that might be added to the basic package such as premium movie channels or pay-per-view events. The compilation of these packages, along with any other extra channels added to basic, will become the monthly bill. Of course, your home must be set-up, or “Wired” before you can begin viewing your cable programming. Most of the companies who sell the programming will also perform the installation. Customers should ask what is included in a normal installation, as well as any fees included for wiring additional TV sets within the home. Home owners should also ask about any additional fees including late charges and early disconnection charges. Also, customers should be aware of when they are expected to pay any programming and installation fees. As with any contract, one should look over it carefully and be sure who is responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged equipment. All consumers should be aware of the refund policy terms and conditions. Satellite Unlike cable, Satellite systems require subscribers to install outside antennae, or dish, as well as a receiver which will be inside the home and attached to the Television set itself. Payments must be made for both the current month and the following month; however, customers may subscribe under one to two year contracts. Often the companies will offer extra incentive for signing a contract. Dish Network and DirecTV both provide national Satellite programming and subscriptions to either network can be obtained through local providers in most cases. The equipment is wired specifically for each company and cannot be used interchangeably, so consumers should be certain to choose the best company for them to spare themselves the cost of having to buy new equipment if they decide to switch. Upon initial subscription, most agents provide am introductory package; however, these packages are limited to first-time installation. Consumers should be aware that whoever installs the equipment is also responsible for the condition of the equipment, making certain it is installed correctly, and instructing the user on how to operate it. When shopping for a local dealer: • Find out the company’s physical address • Is the sales person knowledgeable and professional • Ask about customer service & hours • Can the system be demonstrated • Ask for a list of references • Call the Bureau for a report 691-1533 When shopping for programming: • Make sure you fully understand the package, options and monthly fees • Carefully read any contract obligations • Ask and understand any refund options • Ask about early cancellation policies / penalties Customers should be ready to provide personal identification including their social security number for a credit check. Some companies will also require deposits. |
