I've heard the terms "Southern Baptist", "First Baptist" and "Reform Baptist". I understand that there are even more variations than those. Can anyone explain the differences (briefly, without writing a novel)?

Some Baptist churches align themselves with Conventions like the Southern Baptist. An association if you will or a club of other Baptist who share a common goal, like sending Missionaries out into the world
When they agree on the basics and share a common goal they feel that they can be stronger as a group and get more accomplished.

First Baptist is really just a name for any local church.
You will find first Baptist churches in many cities all over. Although many of them I know of are in the Southern Baptist Convention, it does not automatically mean so

Reformed Baptist and others like Independent Baptist, have separated themselves from other conventions because of disagreements on teachings (doctrine) or other differences. I could go further into Reformed teachings, but you said you didn't want a novel:D

Thanks! Who knew there were so many different variations of Baptists?? The reason I asked is because there was a church I was trying to get some info on and I asked the same question through their website over a week ago, no response. I was just trying to figure out if the name of the church was...hypothetically speaking "Harvest Baptist Church", how would I know which type of Baptists they were? Maybe it's a dumb question.....I was just curious.

The best way to find out is to ask.

I did.....via the church's website. It's been roughly 1 1/2 weeks and no reply as of yet....although I did get an automated reply saying that they received my e-mail and they would get back with me.....I guess they are still pondering the question. ;)

Harvest Baptist Church is an Independent Fundamental Baptist Church
They are not affiliated with the Southern Baptist and are generally fairly conservative in areas such as music.
Independent Baptist believe that the local church is 100 percent independent and should be self supporting and self governing.
That church started up about 5 years ago when two small groups of people got together when their churches changed pastors.

Mike Jones the pastor over at Harvest used to pastor over at Faith Baptist on S 20th
They have had trouble with different people working on the website, I'd say it doesn't work and nobody is paying any attention to it right now.
More than likely they aren't getting your emails

Sparky, you are a gentleman and a scholar. That information is much appreciated. :)

I was raised Baptist with very long Baptist roots. It always seemed to me that when I had a doctrinal question, it was always avoided. I could never understand it. It wasnt until I was an adult that I figure out that most Baptist do not know or study the doctrines of being a Baptist. Too many anomalies in the Bible that they could not answer either. It was a very big turn off for me. My religion is between me and God now. Called of God.....??? How does one know he is called of God? What gives the right for someone to baptize over someone in the streets? Going to college and going to seminary college does not make sense to me.

I do not think you are the only person who questions the motives behind religion. Does that make any sense?

the word Fundamental just gives me the creeps! It seems that Fundamentalists are a little extreme in their practices.

Excellent point. It amazes me when I ask a "devout" baptist the exact same question I asked here and they look at me like I'm speaking a foreign language. Call me crazy, but if your going to believe in something so strongly, shouldn't you be educated in what you believe in? I have found that alot of folks are just "sheeple", meaning they haven't done the research into what they "believe" in, they just like the church and pastor/preacher. It's frustrating to me to see people just follow along like a herd of cattle and don't even know if they are a Southern Baptist, 1st Baptist, or Reform Baptist.:confused:

My religion is between me and God now.

Same here....partly for the reasons we're discussing now, but mostly due to the blatant hypocracy and fakeness that seems to engulf some churches. I haven't given up on churches, but I'm going to be very selective.

hey guys just remember, all God has to work with down here are sinners.
People aren't perfect, pastors aren't perfect.
The last man who was perfect, they killed him.

not trying to be a smart elec but it God is the reason I go to church.
The very minute you put your trust in any man they'll let you down.
I have also had some wonderful Christian mentors in my life when I needed them most, seems funny the Lord sends people your way when you need a little encouragement. All they have to do is be willing to listen and obey.

don't give up!!;)

All I will say in this thread is there are good and "bad" in all beliefs. I happened to come to know the Lord as Saviour when attending Faith Baptist back when it was called Corinth Baptist and was located on S. 6th & Sycamore. This was decades ago. Then pastor Elbert G. Peak is a very knowledgeable person about End Times Prophecy and ALL of it, and as far as I know, they still put out a publication about Prophetic Times.
Like Sparky, I go to church for the Lord, not a "belief name tag".
