Are you doing anything to prepare for Ike? Do you have any family on the coast? How bad do you think the storm will be?

Most of my family is in the Houston area and they are pretty worried. They decided to stay, only because they are not in the surge danger zone, they are about 60 miles inland, but they are expecting 100 mile sustained wind, so yes, we are watching the storm very closely. Even the county that we lived in(about 80 miles north of Galveston) is under hurricane warnings. My brother is in the Emergency Management department in a county adjacent to Harris County, and he is very busy, as you can imagine.
They are boarding up their windows and they went several days ago to gather water, food, and other supplies.
I guess you can say that our past hurricane fears encouraged us to go gather extra water, food and supplies here as well. It will be interesting to see what a hurricane that hits Galveston will be like when it hits here.lol
We lived in a town about an hour and a half north of Houston when they evacuated for Rita several years back, and that alone was a nightmare and nerve wrecking. The evacuees bought out all of the stores, gas, and literally trashed our town. They opened I45 southbound lanes to northbound lanes, so all 4 lanes of the highway were northbound. It had a very silent, scared spirit about it. It was just as bad when they went home.
I spoke to some friends yesterday and they said that it is just as insane as with Rita, and that the evacuees are mean and they practically knock you over at Walmart. It is not even a Super Walmart, just a tiny one. I know that several of the smaller towns are not setting up shelters for the evacuees because of the trouble with them from Rita, so they are all going to the larger cities to find shelter.
I can only imagine leaving my home, not really knowing where to go, or where to say, or how long it will take to get there, or if there will be enough gas to get you there. So, I guess it is understandable and a little more tolerable when they wipe out the stores and act a little crazy.
My prayers are with everyone involved, and especially to my family that is staying behind. It is a scary situation.
And that was one of the main reasons we moved to the Big Country!

Say a prayer because I no how complacent some get and don't leave.
I lived a spell down their and we cut and run once every year or two.
Some never leave.
Lived in League City and had some jobs in Galveston and Texas City back in the 80's. (hurricane Allen and tropical storm Claudette come to mind)
Unbelievable hassle getting anywhere and getting back could be worse
with the flood waters. Tons of water. No family there, but a few friends and they are out. Seems after New Orleans people take them a little more seriously.
