don't let the beggars fool you.
The hang out on the corner to get CASH to buy BOOZE
if the beggars go to a church, they will get food, clothes, general help and hopefully some spiritual guidance, but rarely will churches give cash because they know what it will be spent on.
The beggars on the corners is a simple supply and demand,
People feel guilty and give them cash, they buy booze with it
Jesus even said the the poor would always be with us
No matter how much money, how many shelters, or churches are in a town, there will be beggars

Yep, I grew up in Abilene, went to 1st grade at ACC, started college at McMurry, and graduated from HSU. I really made the rounds. Back then Abilene was a great place to live. Don't spend much time there any more.

It has its shady parts, but is still a great town.
last time i was there, some overweight creepy guy kept trying to stalk my 10 year old. Finally, at the third store i saw him approach my son at, i ran him off. He acted insulted...but what kind of guy approaches a 10 year old boy in three separate stores?
All in all, it is a good town i think. just like any other town.

The house I grew up in on North 15th and Beech, the last time I went by there a couple of years ago, was condemed and awaiting destruction. Sad, I, my friends also, had many great times in the old neigoborhood. College Heights Elementary School, North Junior High School, Abilene High School, such powerful, powerful memories.
Opps, sorry, I was not trying to hijack this thread, just got over whelmed by the memeories. Us old folks do that from time to time. Sorry.

Yes, when I graduated AHS it was the only High School in Abilene. I remember as a kid going to Woodson High School football games. My next door neghibor drove a school bus so I got to go to some great football games and see some great bands when I was a kid. Once again, ahh, the memories.

when i was in high school, we were in the same district as Abilene Wylie. District 7-AAA.
One year, when Ballinger was #2 in the state, Wylie put the whuppin on them. We had to play them the very next week. And we won 19-7. Biggest game of my high school life (was a sophomore at the time).
That same year, Wylie lost a player to a broken neck during kick return. It was a very somber year for them, and they played like men possessed.
Man, i miss those days. *sigh*
