due to racism, yes. but i could care less what kind of manniquin people hang up. it is a non issue unless someone wants to worry too much about the arcane.

I told you this would happen.
Two college students hung an effigy of Obama and got arrested for it!

this double standard makes me sick.:(

to me it is silly.

hang the mannequin, don't hang the mannequin...i will ignore it either way.

keep in mind that "hate law" legislation is the hang up.

You are correct,

I try my best to believe it is a very small group of people that fuel the flames of racism. On the other hand I also believe some people too thin skinned.

"Everybody is predigested in one way or another, but it only becomes racism when one acts on these predigests"

I just think that "reverse" racism is just as bad as racism to begin with

Oh, I will agree with you there

Lets start some new racial groups based on "thin skin", "thick skinned", and "feathered back"

Abilene has a "Black" chamber of commerce

That isn't racism...but it doesn't help with removing racism.

Feeling the need for a black chamber of commerce shows something. whether it be that one group or another feels like they need to have an outlet for their voice, or whatever...it is not something that should gain municipal approval.

i think everyone should just marry a different race from their own. that way we will all be more inter related. :D Me? I found a gorgeous Mexican girl about 14 years ago and have been enamored ever since.

...

IMHO, anytime you have a group only for one specific race of people to be in... that is racist.

think of what would happen if there were a "white" chamber of commerce?

if they don't allow you to join, it is illegal.

sparky-4

Illegal, immoral, racist

the test of whether something is offensive should be to say, if it applies only to one race of people, then it is suspect. OR if it were reversed would it "offend" another group

and I submit you you that if someone tried to charter a white chamber of commerce, that person would be labeled a racist

and your point about allowing open membership, is another point on a deeper level but a good one nonetheless :)

this is going to get me yelled at, iam sure....but here goes.

if one is talking racism, especially towards black people, they need to make sure they are separating black "people" from black "culture". Do you hate the person, or the behaviors surrounding the culture the person is involved in?

Hating because of skin color is racism. Hating because of culture is just hatred. It is no more right, morally speaking. But there is a difference.

I do not understand the double-standard between the two instances of political figure effigies being hung...

the guy in Hollywood said it was "art"
the guys in Kentucky made a political speech and got arrested for disorderly conduct

unless the locals laws were that much different ?

The double standard reason, to me, seems obvious.

In hollywood you don't have a history of lynching. In Kentucky you do.

so, if an Obama effigy were hanged in California it would have been treated just like the Palin one?

bigfatfurrytexan
11-02-2008, 05:59 PM
Legally? who knows.

California is an odd, odd place. I try to not go there, if i can help it.

when i was a boy i was excited to visit san diego. we went to mission beach, the san diego zoo...all that cool stuff. I tell you, the "california girls" were not what they are cracked up to be. in saw 10X's more hot chicks on one street corner, waiting to cross the street, up at Tech in Lubbock than i saw the whole time i was in california.

i think that, in california, you would have seen the issue forgotten just as easily if the person doing it were able to pass it off in the same way, yes. but who knows. how can you predict the behavior of people who do enema's for fun?

well, I guess I am going to drop this topic, at least from BCHP
But I still know there is a double standard in this country on who can be racially discriminated and who cannot

This is just another case in point.

Americans are gun shy about offending some groups of hyphenated Americans.

Sparky out;)

There most definately is. On the bright side, when Obama gets elected, we don't have to hear black folks complain about "the man" holding them down. Just carry a picture of Obama around with you and when a black person starts to complain about something, stop them and whip out your picture of Obama and tell them to shut up. (Idea stolen from a bit by Carlos Mencia)

There are double standards everywhere though. Example: Women in the military. Women have more relaxed weight standards, more relaxed fitness standards (allowed longer run times, less push ups & sit ups), and are treated differently (better) as to not offend them. I have no problem with women in the military, just make them adhere to the same standards as men. So my point is, in this era of political correctness and walking on eggshells to not offend anyone, there will always be double standards.

This is true. We may remove one excuse for people who don't wish to do what it takes to contribute to society. Maybe Bill Cosby will have some ammo to use in his speeches?

There are so many more, but many will cross into other ethnic types.

MLK dream has been spit on by people like Jackson, Sharpton,
Quanell X and other activist. It makes me too sick to discuss it.
