View Full Version : David Gergen on AC360: Ronald Reagan was a Socialist!

This clip has a lot of goodies in it including Palin bring up her clothes right before the election and David's shock at the circling firing squad by the McCain camp directed at Sarah.
What is rare is to have campaign aides putting a harpoon in the candidate, and then some of the candidate's friends firing back.
But on a serious note, As McCain keeps attacking Obama as a "socialist" and a "Redistributionist in Chief," David Gergen reminds us that Ronald Reagan actually starting "spreading the wealth."
Gergen: Now, one of the most effective popular programs we've had in the last three decades. It's called the earned income tax credit. It's a program whereby, if you're a working person, a working couple and you're below the poverty line, the government will actually give you money. That's a redistributed program. It's a program which takes money from the upper classes and gives it to the lower -- to the working poor.
Now who started that program? The earned income tax credit? Ronald Reagan. It was one of the -- it was an achievement of the Reagan administration that Bill Clinton then built on.
The Republican Party has been dancing on Reagan's bones for some time now as THE conservative to emulate. Well, he did raise taxes when he had too and after this tidbit of information I guess he's just a typical socialist after all.
Full transcript available here. (http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0810/27/acd.01.html)
I am amazed that most of the big news organization seem bored at this point pointing out that Sen. McCain's entire campaign at this point is based on knowing falsehoods. How to make it more exciting for them? Moose calls & the sound of SAMs being fired?

Reagan was a capitalist, not a socialist.
BTW, the socialist leader was on Colbert last night, and he did everything he could to make sure we knew Obama was not a socialist, but a capitalist. Just like Reagan was.
I also think Obama is clueless, but that is due to inexperience and not a flaw. I might consider voting for him in 4 more years...but not yet.
scarier still is the likelihood that some redknecks will try to "off" him, leaving us with Biden as president.

Yeah, whatever, the fact is we've had socialist programs propping up American style capitalism since at least Teddy Roosevelt, who was the first to offer progessive taxation.
I appreciate your naive political views but the topic relates to a video clip and to what was said..............and the lies and da***d lies promulgated by the McCrazy/Moosebuns cabal...

would you rather i not partake in this discussion? You are certainly not acting very civil. I sure hope we don't begin to see an old pattern emerge here, Shrub. :)
Naivete aside, he was a capitalist, not a socialist. He enacted social programs, for sure. But i watch the occassional Bollywood film, that doesn't make me Indian. What he did was enact some social programs in an attempt to work across the aisle. This is why he was such a popular president.

so we can only discuss if we are going to agree that there are lies being told, suggest ways to improve their lies, and then smear them for choosing to hunt?
i find this a hard topic to discuss, if it is going to be forced into such a narrow venue.
I would assume that since Reagan and "socialist" was in the title of the thread, we could discuss him and refute his socialist leanings? Is that not fair game?
the.shrubinator

I CAN say that Reagan has nothing to do with McCain/Palin. He isn't even alive anymore. I am even more dumbfounded at what the connection is. I would rather see Reagan running, for sure. We need another Reagan, i think.

Oh yeah, now I remember Reagan the socialist.. isn't he the one who fired all of the Federal Air Traffic Controllers when they went on strike and tried to shut down air travel?
Wasn't it Reagan the Socialist who abolished the fairness doctrine when he gave the FCC an enema? That gave birth to conservative talk radio and a rebirth to free political speech?
If you were going to put Ronald Reagan and Barack O'bomber on trial for being a socialist, you wouldn't have enough evidence to convict Reagan and O'bomber's trial would be a slam dunk. Although his attorneys would keep appealing the court's decisions and delaying the discovery of evidence and all the while selling the TV coverage of the trial.

The Socialist Candidate for president was on TV last night (i think Colbert) and was fighting awful hard to separate Obama and the Socialist party. He seemed to be somewhat insulted at the notion. Obama is not a socialist. I think the "wealth redistribution" was more GOP spin than anything.
But it IS fun to poke fun at.

It's desperation time here fro the pubbies and it's nothing new to them..............when they know they are losing they bring out the socialist label much the same as Goldwater tried to paint LBJ in 64/...
I knew Eugene Debs and Barack is far from being a socialist. :cool:I was chatting with some Euro friends on irc the other night and they think Americans and their politics are a joke......... hahahaha

The Euro's have their own issues. they can think of our politics whatever they want. they don't live in our nation, and they all beg our nation for handouts. i think of them as "petulent children".
What does 1964 have to do with 2008?
Are we going to refer to ancient elections?

Would you like to talk to my foreign friends? As a member of a fairly respected research consortium, i have the opportunity to visit with great minds from all over Europe, primarily eastern Europe.
Maybe the opinion you recieve of the US comes from the types of places you get them from? I doubt folks in the ghetto will say much good about the police.. But in the suburbs....yeah, different answer. Consider your source, as that may be where the disconnect lies. :D

I have a close friend that is the dean of science at one of the major universities doing nanotech study in N. Carolina. I have posted quite a bit of stuff forwarded to me by him. The pro-GOP cartoons from Australia came from him.
Dr. James Baker, the dean of science at UCal-Berkeley (and imminent gravitational research guru) and i have exchanged a few emails, as well as Ron Koczor (a muckety muck for NASA at the Birmingham facility).
Then there are the physicists from Romania and England (and another one that just retired from the ARL and is moving to Hungary). Then there is the lady who is the anthropologist (her husband designs aircars for the ARL, and that is how we met the physicist that recently retired from there).
Another friend is a fairly well known actress, if you are familiar with movies that were released through the 90's (she finds the industry dispicable and retired as an actress, preferring to produce independantly).
I have also had a few conversations with an adult actor that we all know from recent TV appearances. He is a real hoot, and much more intellectual than you would likely care to believe. We don't talk often (the others i communicate with multiple times daily, some via phone calls).
Probably the best known (that i will tell publicly) is John Lear. His father was the owner of the Lear Jet company. He is a member of our research group, and quite the character and accomplished pilot (working for a few airlines, as well as the well known CIA op "Air America").
My point? Nothing, other than throwing around the credentials of your friends doesn't matter much. The folks who will believe you still aren't going to give a rip. :D
If you would like to know more about some of the folks i refer to, please visit www.thelivingmoon.com. There is a listing, i believe, on the front page of a large portion of our research group. Many others are not listed, as they participate soley via our Yahoo group (which you can also find listed under "Pegasusgroup", or something to that effect).
I don't wish to visit the forum you linked me to, Shrub. I have my hands full with the contacts i currently have, and they support active research i am involved in. :D But thanks for the invite.
