why are dogs and cats treated differently in the area of owner responsibility?

Here is my beef with cat owners.

A neighbor has 4 or 5 cats.
They are allowed to run the neighborhood, through the yards spraying my plants, vehicle tires and whatever else they choose. They craw up on my cars at night and on the nights when there is a heavy due they have a blast sliding down my windshield or back glass leaving me to clean it off.

If on the other hand I let my 50 pound beagle out to run up and down, doing pooping and peeing everywhere but in my yard and gave it a hand up to sit on my neighbors' cars they would call animal control and report me.

why the two standards?

I dunno. Do what i do: set cat traps and partner with the humane society. :)

if a cat owner has to bail their cat out a few times, perhaps they will learn to be better owners?

yeah I know that works

sometimes there isn't a "right" answer. So, in that case, i usually try to opt for the most logical and humane.

As well, you can't force others to do things a certain way. But you can make it uncomfortable for them if they don't do things the "right" way.

:) Take care, good sir!

Cats do not have to have a collar on with the rabies tag either. However, cats take care of themselves. They cover up their poop and pee, you dont have to feed them, they hunt, and they usually do not bark all night at the moon.

they make plenty of noise at night. Keeps me awake quite often. :)

And thier pee and poop ruins vegetable gardens. It is not recommended that you eat from a garden that animals have voided in.

True about the noise at night, but they will either mate or fight and then be done with it.

As far as I know, I do not think my garden has been contanimated with cats. I have no cats, so I assume not, and I think my bear of a dog in the back yard keeps them out.....

I have a little Marlin .22 semi auto that is a great fix to that problem. In Texas you have a right to protect your property....that doesn't exclude cats.

You get robbed often by cats? Are they "cat burglars"?

respect for life applies to more than humans.

Nope, but I had one claw the crap out of the seat on my $8K jet ski. Ruined the whole seat. That was the last time that happenned. Are all you Midland folks card carrying PETA members or something?

I love rhetorical questions. Look, the bottom line is if you are responsible pet owners like you all claim to be, then you have absolutely nothing to worry about. It's not like I go out hunting for cats. A box of .22 longrifle is alot cheaper than replacing a jet ski seat though, so you do the math. Do you actually think I'm supposed to stand by and do nothing while an animal damages my personal property?? You must be smoking some good stuff over there in Midland. No traps so the stupid thing can simply come back and do it again....I nip it in the bud the first time. Once again for the hearing impaired (or reading impaired in this case), IF YOU ARE A RESPONSIBLE PET OWNER AND DON'T LET YOUR "PETS" RUN LOOSE TO TERRORIZE YOUR NEIGHBORS, YOU HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT!

I think PETA is a sham, and i abhor the organization. :)

My dogs stay locked up in my house or back yard. If not, they are on a leash.

Do the laws of your area allow shooting animals? Here, you have to contact the county and they will set up traps.

The law is there to prevent cruelty to animals from occuring. They are warehoused in a detention center, and if they can be adopted out they are. If not, they are euthanized.

I wish that didn't have to happen, too. But responsible pet owners are not that frequent, and they are often left unneutered or unspayed, so that they can reproduce.

I don't argue with your rational. I am concerned about the joy you expressed over having to do it. Killing is grim work, regardless of the animal. Respect and honor must be maintained.

I am not a vegan or anything. But in my faith, mindless killing brings bad karma and puts me further from my creator. :)

And don't think that I am hating on you. I am not. It is ok to disagree, and it is ok for me to hope you can understand what i am saying and that it might make a difference. If it doesn't, I will still love you in the morning! :D

Something you might consider: mothballs are a great deterrent for animals. Put them around your house (and under it), and you likely will see a sharp drop in animal interlopers.

Ditto

I appreciate that and I'm sure your community appreciates that as well. My little Chloe is a house dog, but when she's out with us she's on a leash. That's my responsibility

Do the laws of your area allow shooting animals?

Absolutely not. The specific example I gave was when I was stationed in Charleston, SC. I don't have much use for a jet ski here in Abilene. ;)

Then my post didn't properly convey my point. I don't enjoy killing anything (except maybe a nice 8-point) My apologies if I came across as some kind of a monster....I assure you I'm far from it. I work hard and I've sacraficed alot for what little I have, and the point I'm trying to make is that I will do what it takes to protect them from damage.....that's all. :D

Holy Mackeral this post took forever.....I bet I had to get up about 20 times to give out candy! :D

a few years back we bought a used bunk bed and went out and bought a new mattress for the bottom bed.
While I was repainting and getting the bed ready to move in, we left the brand new mattress out on the back patio which is covered.

This was before I got my dog.
Sometime during the night, a freaking cat peed all over the mattress
I was absolutely livid. The plastic wrapping was still on and it protected it but it is just the thought that a neighbors cat can come in my yard and do $100 in damage to my property

that is just not right

I have never shot any cats, but I have trapped several and turned them into the city.
the problem is just out of hand in some areas.

again, If I let my dog run free at night to do as he pleased I would get fined

I am a supporter of spaying and neutering......except for my bear of a black lab, of whom I am hoping to make a few bucks with.

I am a cat owner (a dog owner as well) and have never had a problem with my cat going outside during the night (only time he likes to go out). Although I was blessed with the coolest cat on the planet (as I hate cats before I got him), he likes to go outside and just hang out near the patio... Doesn't go off terrorizing the neighbors or anything. Never had a complaint from a neighbor, and until I do, I will continue to allow him to go outside whenever he wants.

I have two indoor cats. As much as I love my own, the ones that show up to use my backyard as their own personal litter box infuriate me.

The best cats are the ones that are spayed and neutered. They live longer, they do not spray anything and they do not wonder away from their home.

They also try to avoid fights. They also do not reproduce and then you have to worry about giving away kittens.

I do love cats, I do love dogs.
