The information included in this article is presented as opinions believed to be factual by the writer. If any of this content is not correct, I will gladly write a retraction. If you feel my political opinions may cause any undue negative effect, please choose not to read it. In other words: READ AT YOUR OWN RISK.
If unquestioned integrity is an important issue in the upcoming Taylor County Sheriff's race, there is only one candidate for you: Art Casarez. The Konstantin for Abilene Movement Advisory Board is made up of Ron Konstantin, who recently ran for Mayor of Abilene, 2 Republicans, 2 Democrats, 1 Libertarian, 1 Ron Paul supporter, and 2 independents. We discussed all of the current elections, with the goal of providing voters with an unbiased view of candidates that effect the local area. With the exception of one race, we came up with nothing that the media has not already covered.
Our conclusions about the Sheriff's race were as follows: We did an extensive background check of both candidates. There were only 3 allegations of misconduct we could dig up over Art Casarez's long Career. None could be substantiated. There were a total of 52 different sources that questioned Mr. Bruce in some way. Not all of these could be proven either. What was compelling was the similarities among the concerns brought before us, as well as the sheer number to investigate. Also, some of the sources of the allegations seemed beyond reproach. Many Republicans included those concerned, and even frightened by the candidacy of Les Bruce. Also nagging irregularities in Bruce's property taxes, and assets that seemed outside the average policeman's means, plagued us. Mr. Bruce reportedly showed up at a former member of my campaign's home unannounced, and then sat across the street watching the home when she chose not to answer the door. If this story, that multiple people tell me is true, that is just plain weird. I am not a hard man to contact. To whomever this may concern, my plea is: Please leave my supporters, especially the single female ones, alone.
In this country you are considered innocent until PROVEN guilty. The only crime committed by some people in the county jail, is not having enough money to bail out. Housing prisoners is expensive. Casarez seems as concerned with rehabilitation, as incarceration. His prison ministry tells me he sees inmates as human beings, that he does not want to return. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. No swat team mentality present with Art Casarez.
Also, why not pay officers a decent wage? Did we not kick the current sheriff out for being aloof and not being in touch with the needs of current deputies? We want to keep the people we have, and also attract better applicants that more pay will garner.
In the end the multi-partisan Konstantin for Abilene Movement Advisory Board concluded unanimously to endorse Casarez. The sheriff's race was the only instance where the board chose to back a candidate. Given a choice between a man of faith, with a masters degree, and another with no degree, who was former swat team member; the choice to me was clear. It was further agreed that partisanship is not a particularly relevant motif in a Sheriff's race. It was obvious to us that Mr. Casarez is running out of a concern for the greater good of Taylor County, and not on behalf of partisan motivations, or ambition. Justice is best served when it is blind to political maneuvering, or bias.
If you want an arrogant elitist, who is out of touch with the needs of inmates and officers alike, with more questions than answers; Les Bruce is your man.
If you want a diversely experienced, educated, and honorable man of God with a vision for the future; vote for Art Casarez.
