View Full Version : Dyess Traffic Signals!

This may be (sort of) off topic for "military," but here's my beef. What is the deal on the traffic lights on Dyess just past the main gate -- at Arnold and Louisiana? The traffic lights are "supposed" to be regulated by the installed intelligent sensors to allow active traffic more time, right? Makes sense. However, not so. There can be a massive amount of active traffic on the main drag, Arnold Blvd., yet the light switches to Red even when there's NO traffic on the adjacent Hospital and Louisiana Roads. What good is that? Again, why is the green light given to the roads with No traffic when there are gobs of vehicles stopped on the active road?
Military intelligence! Yes, that must be it. In any case, perhaps the traffic engineers on Dyess could see that they have a problem here. Will it change? I doubt it because there is someone who "has a reason" for this insane situation. And we all don't EVEN want to hear that one!

You should call the base commander's office and tell him how much fuel is being wasted every time a bunch of traffic has to stop for no reason other than the light is not working right.
Really, I am serious, as environmentally sensitive as the Military is these days, that might be enough for him to get CE out there and find a solution.
When lights are not timed and working right, it causes excessive idling in traffic which waste fuel and makes more pollution

Sure glad I have no reason to venture that direction. These in town are bad enough.

Sparky..... I would call the traffic engineering office at Dyess, but I've tried calling Dyess offices of responsibility before, and it doesn't work. No one cares, no one is in charge (or he's on leave). Or.... they'll take a message and say they'll pass it on, but they won't. Meanwhile, the green traffic light is still ON for those roads with NO traffic!!
Note: IMHO, the aircraft Maintenance and Operations groups at Dyess are not included in the comments above. Those organizations are sharp because they are closest to the real mission there. But CE........... forget it.

The lights on the base are crazy long. That is for sure.
You're kidding right? There's only one light on the entire base, and that's at the first intersection after coming through the gate. People will complain about anything these days. The only time there is any congestion at all is in the afternoon when we're all going home or in the morning when we're going to work, and even then it's not that bad.

I'm not trying to be rude here, but you do realize there's a war going on right? Saving you 1 or 2 minutes of time by "fixing" a light that isn't broken probably isn't at the top of the priority list.

Ahhh, now I understand. By the above statement I know for a fact you're not in the military. I'm in aircraft maintenance, but I assure you my comrades in CE are right there with us. You see we all depend on each other, and you would know that if you were one of us.

Slapshot, I don't get your reply. Reprogramming a traffic light is not big a deal -- what, a half hour or so. And it doesn't have to be on the "priority list," just on the list.
I don't see the horror of fixing the timing issue at Arnold Blvd where "no traffic" situations get a green light, whereas active traffic gets the red. And you're right, it's not a big deal. But it is called "getting it right," like Col Ray used to say.

so, by Slapshots reasoning, if they take time to fix the traffic lights, we might loose the war in Iraq.
...better let the lights wait, in fact, quit mowing the grass on base too, it that hurts the war effort. Didn't they build a brand new Gymnasium out there recently, during the war?

Mowing the grass and building gyms is accomplished by civilian contractors. Feel free to make any other assumptions.

maybe so and good comeback., but they are still Air Force resources that use up Military oversight and budget

OK, let's forego the traffic light thing for a while. If you think waiting at a Red Light behind 15 cars when there's no cross traffic is fine, then OK with me. But..........
......dude, what about this link on your messages!!!!!!:
What really happended on 9-11? The truth is out there <----- that's the link.
Uh, you aren't one of those that think it was an "inside job?" Pleeeeeze say it ain't so! Did you see the Stephenville UFOs too? What about Elvis in Buffalo Gap last week?
Just kiddin' I guess............

Newsflash. Friday, Aug 22, I "think" I saw traffic engineers working on THE traffic light. One dude was working with the overhead sensors and the other was programming the timing. Can't tell yet if there will be an improvement -- however, the Hospital Drive cross traffic seems to have been given a LOT more time (for very few cars) like perhaps 4 minutes?? All the while, the active, heavy traffic on Arnold was waiting even longer now! That may not be permanent -- they WERE working it. Will see how this turns out.
Yes, Yes, I know. Such a small thing. We have wars to fight, people to feed, leaders to get elected. So...... bite me!

No worries. I am familiar with your kind....you aren't happy unless you're complaining about something....no matter how miniscule the "problem". It's all good. :)

Just to keep this topic on the front page, sorry! The "intelligent" sensor-driven traffic light at the main gate still continues to function as before. Twenty five cars were lined up at the main gate waiting for the Green (Jan 2) while there was no traffic on the side roads. But hey, it's OK. Why bother with improvement when mediocre will do. After all, Traffic Engineering at Dyess has wars to fight!
