Missing School Days Gets Parents Arrested

By: Maria Oliver/NBC
Updated: February 21, 2009
The parents of a California student are being taught a lesson in responsibility because their daughter has missed every day of school this year.

The parents were ordered to serve fifty days in jail for contributing to the delinquency of their 13-year old daughter.

They claim their daughter was teased at school and won't go back.

The school district reached out by offering parent conferences, home visits, even medical and mental health assistance.

Officials say the parents have both a moral and legal obligation to educate their daughter.

The girl's father is currently serving jail time while the mother will begin serving when he is released in mid-march.
