Illegal Dumping Increases Fire Danger

Since a fire started near the Ben E. Keith building on Ambler, the Abilene Fire Department has been back at least half a dozen times because of smoldering brush. But more that just brush burned in that fire. Old tree trucks flamed back up- and some trash dumped illegally also smoldered, prompting calls from passers-by.
It is a problem that is adding to the fuel already there to burn.
Illegal dumping is something that the Environmental Enforcement Officer for Taylor County deals with everyday.
He says all dumping except at a landfill is illegal- even dumping on your own property is against the law.
It is a problem not only because of the pollution, but as we now know, if a fire starts in one of these illegal dumping areas it makes it more difficult for fire fighters to fight and put it out for good.
