Many people in Abilene have received a check like this, offering you the chance to cash in on big bucks.
"When I opened it up and saw the check for $2,980, first thing I said is,'This is too good to be true,'" admits Billy King, who received a fake check promising money.
The check and letter even included the Publisher's Clearing House name, and he says receiving junk mail like this can be frustrating. "It is kind of aggravating to get some of it. Even more aggravating to get something saying you won almost $3,000 when you know it's not true."
He's not alone, Abby Leanpolicee received a similar check. Only we know this name as, Abilene Police. Detective John Clark adds that even the Police Department isn't above getting the bogus checks. "This is a check for $2,000 this was a counterfeit check, and this is part of what's commonly referred to as a Nigerian scam, but even Abilene Police Department is receiving these checks."
Which to King, just means someone is trying too hard for money. "When you told me the Police Department got one, I said, 'These people are really stretching it, trying to get somebody to give them some money.'"
Both King and Detective Clark caution others to be careful when offers like this come around.
