Something for Everyone in the Budget?

By: RNS
Updated: April 8, 2009
House Appropriations Committee Chairman Jim Pitts says the budget bill has something for everybody.

  • Although it doesn't extend as far as some would prefer, state workers and retired teachers would receive one-thousand dollars, and college students would find more financial assistance.
  • It doesn't allow children to remain eligible for Medicaid for a dozen months rather than the six currently in force.
  • The $178 billion budget was approved yesterday by a House committee.
  • The proposal from the state Senate is larger and offers more money for roads and cancer bonds.
  • It would also offer less money for student aid and no bonuses for state employees.
  • The Senate bill also has a ban on funding for embryonic stem cell studies.
