The Texas Department of State Health Services is launching a new campaign to boost organ, tissue and eye donor registrations.
Family and Community Health Services spokesperson Evelyn Delgado encourages residents to learn about organ donation and then talk with their families.
Delgado says it only takes a few minutes to sign up, but it could save someone's life.
Officials say nearly 9,000 people in Texas are waiting for life-saving organs, and there is a critical shortage of available transplant organs.
People can register to become a donor online at www.DonateLifeTexas.org or at their local driver license office.
More than 500 people in Texas died waiting for organ transplants last year. More than 270,000 people in Texas are registered as donors.
