Second Bonham Vandal Sentenced

By: Maria Oliver
Updated: April 8, 2009
The 14-year-old boy who vandalized Bonham Elementary is headed into custody.  He and his 15-year-old accomplice both pleaded "true" -- same thing as guilty -- to arson, felony criminal mischief, attempted burglary of a building and evading arrest.

A judge today sentenced him to up to 12 months in the Taylor County Juvenile Detention Center, where he and the other teen will go through rehabilitation, then be put on probation once released.

The mess caused by the teenagers is estimated at $120,000 to $200,000.  Taxpayers would be pay for a portion of the cost.

Just before Christmas, the teens broke into the vacant school which has been closed for repairs all year.  They sprayed graffiti, broke windows, broke water pipes, and set the gym on fire.

AISD officials say Bonham Elementary is still set to reopen in the fall and the damage done to the gym will not delay it.
