State Tax Revenue Drops, Abilene Rises

By: RNS/Laura Kellerman
Updated: April 9, 2009
Despite sales tax revenue across the state being down for the month of March, allocations to Abilene were up 3.02 percent.

The city received $2.44 million for April, compared to $2.38 million for April 2008.

The state of Texas received $1.58 billion in sales tax revenue last month, which is down 3.8 percent compared to March 2008.  Overall local allocations amounted to $409.9 million, a 2.2 percent decrease from April 2008.

Brownwood's sales tax allocation dropped by 5.33 percent compared to last April.  The city received $397 thousand compared to $419 thousand.

Texas Comptroller Susan Combs says continued weakness in many important sectors including the retail trade, mining and construction, resulted in a significant decrease in sales tax collections.

She says year-to-date sales tax revenue is up nearly 2 for fiscal year 2009, but further declines are expected this year.
