Winds from the West Bring Dirt, Damage

By: Laura Kellerman
Updated: April 9, 2009
Westerly winds are blowing a significant amount of dust into the Big Country, which could be creating a visibility problem for drivers.

The wind is blowing at 35 to 45 miles per hour and gusts are reaching up to 50 miles per hour.  Traffic was closed before 1 p.m. on southbound Winters Freeway between South 14th Street and Southwest Drive because the wind blew a road sign onto the highway.

Winds are also pulling down power lines, causing scattered outages around Abilene.

A Blowing Dust Advisory is in effect for Abilene, Albany, Anson, Baird, Clyde, Cross Plains, Haskell, Hamlin, Roby, Rotan, Stamford, Sweetwater, Throckmorton and Woodson until 4 p.m.

According to Meteorologist Chris Whited, who is keeping folks updated on Twitter, the highest wind gusts as of noon were: Abilene - 48, Dyess AFB - 45, Sweetwater - 57, Snyder - 59, Breckenridge - 44, Brownwood - 41.
