New Study: 1 in 10 Gamers Addicted

By: RNS
Updated: April 20, 2009
(Ames, IA) -- Close to one in ten young video gamers may actually be addicted to the activity.

A study by psychology professor Douglas Gentile of Iowa State University defines "pathological gamers" as those whose habit causes problems with their everyday functioning related to family, school or social situations.

They were more likely to have trouble paying attention in school, got poorer grades and even stole to support their habit.

The study also found those addicted to video games were twice as likely to have been diagnosed with some sort of attention disorder.

Gentile's study will be published in the May edition of the journal "Psychological Science."
