Rescue crews are working quickly to save people from high water in Houston.

Traffic is a nightmare for motorists in the Houston area after about eleven-inches of rain fell across Harris County since Monday afternoon. More rain is expected throughout the day.

National Weather Service meteorologist Ken Prochazka  says a lot of roads are flooded, particularly in the western half of Harris County.  Flooding has been reported along many urban streets, and he says there are some problem areas along Beltway 8 near I-10.

The storms knocked out power to thousands and reportedly flooded several homes in the Bear Creek area.

The floods have forced several school districts to cancel classes today including Cypress-Fairbanks, Alief, Katy and Spring Branch.

No injuries have been reported. Harris County emergency management officials recommend that people stay inside if their house is flooded.  Weather officials urge motorists to turn around if they come to a flooded roadway.

Six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars, causing loss of control and possible stalling, while a foot of water will float many cars.

The Red Cross has opened two shelters in Northwest Harris County for area residents affected by the floods. One shelter is open at Copperfield Church on Highway Six, with a second shelter at Creek United Methodist Church in the 16000 block of Rippling Water.
