Their Boots are Full

This year's Fill the Boot coin drive for the Muscular Dystrophy Association raised $46,532.24, a huge success according to Gary Hamner with the Abilene Fire Department.

The goal was $45,000.

"In years past, we have always waited until our MDA telethon (in September) to announce the totals," he wrote in an email.  "However, because of the success of this year's event, we feel the good news should be shared now."

The Abilene Fill the Boot program, animated by the Abilene and Dyess fire departments, is used by other Texas communities as a benchmark to gague the success of their programs, Hamner said.

The donations will go toward helping the kids in the MDA program go to camp this year.  It also goes toward medical research and to help buy medical equipment.
