A North Texas hospital has developed a diet so extreme participants must check in with their doctors several times a week.
This diet is for people who want to lose between 10 and 100 pounds, and for many people it's working where other diets haven't.
At 44 years old life has never been busier for Sherri Rudeen. She's lost 60 pounds and is still losing. Sherri's diet, 800 calories a day. That's it.
Four protein shakes, prescribed by doctors at U.T. Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.
The calorie reduction is so drastic, participants are assisted three times a week by doctors.
A special bio impendence scale measures weight and fat distribution at each meeting.
"We will also get an estimate of their metabolic rate, which tells us how many calories they need in the course of the day to maintain their weight and as long as they are under that, they are gonna lose weight," said internist Dr. Eve Guth.
And losing, doctor Guth says they are! Sherri plans to lose 45 more but says says she's already a winner her cholesterol is down from 240 to 150.
Doctors designed the weight-loss program for potential bariatric surgery patients. Insurance requires those patients follow a six-month diet program before surgery. But, so many are successful they've opted out of the surgery.
