Now he is getting to know his neighbors a lot more running for Buchanan County Sheriff.
"I've been to practically every neighborhood in St. Joe and Buchanan County," said candidate Pat Grove.
If he is not spending his day riding his motorcycle, Grove is with his family. A strong support group with a rich history of public service.
"I feel that family and home is very important to establishing the level of trust the community wants to see in you," said Grove.
It is a level of trust he wants to bring back to Buchanan County. Something he has not seen since his first days on the force in St. Joseph.
After finishing his career working as an officer in Kansas City, he is ready to take the next step at sheriff.
"The police department here built a great foundation for me," said Grove. "And it was important that you know your neighbors and you know the bad guys and you can separate the two."
Something Grove says can not be done unless officers can reconnect with the people they serve and protect.
Even if it means going door-to-door.
"That's where the face-to-face with the law enforcement officer, whether it be a policeman or a deputy, has lost contact," said Grove.
