Alisa Hail was just one of several residents at Country Club Villas who let out a sigh of relief when she saw her apartment was okay, but the feelings are bittersweet.
"It's a hard thing to realize, that I can't go back home," she said, "I have to go somewhere else."
Although fire did not damage her unit, the thick smoke filtered through the air and absorbed through all her clothing, furniture, and bedding.
"It was so bad," Hail recalls, "my family couldn't stay in there for maybe more than ten minutes."
You can still smell it even a day later. Hail has to open all her doors each time she comes in.
"I was nauseous and light headed," she explained.
Hail is not alone, she says apartment managers worked quickly to find temporary units for displaced tenants, but residents must wait to see what insurance and maintenance crews can do about the items that are not an easy fix. She won't be able to move into her apartment for quite some time, but things could have been a whole lot worse, like her neighbors who lost everything.
"When you look at the damage up close," said Dianne Hail, Alisa's mother, "it just made you want to cry."
As Hail and her neighbors pick up the pieces, she counts her lucky stars.
"It's a good reminder that nothing is guaranteed," she said.
"It's sad," said Mrs. Hail, "but I just thank Jesus for taking care of my child."
Knowing how fast the fire spread, Hail says at the end of the day, she just feels lucky to be alive.
