"Neighborhood Watch isn't about being a busy body. It's about protecting our home," Sue Heath, from the Abilene Police Department said.
Right before yesterday's robbery at the 7-11 on US 277, the Abilene Police Department received a call about some suspicious people in the area. That call was put in by people with Neighborhood Watch.
"They were aware of their surroundings and took the time to call the Police," Heath said.
Sue Heath with the Abilene Police Department said this is a great example of what the neighborhood watch is all about. It's people in every neighborhood in Abilene, that want to keep the city safe.
"You look for people who are traveling through your neighborhood that look out of place," Heath said.
Neighborhood Watch holds quarterly meetings to talk about the things they've seen. They get anywhere from 25 to 100+ people that attend.
"We have young adults, we have couples that are married with children. We have single adults and senior citizens," Heath said.
Heath said it also encourages people to meet their neighbors and develop a relationship with them.
"It's when they get to meet their neighbors, they start to care about what happens to them,” Heath said.
Neighborhood Watch can also help by pointing out something that the police may not have noticed, because they don't live in the area.
