Today was a big day for the entire McMurry community.

The former mascot, which was the Indian, was evaluated by the university and forced to get rid of all together.

McMurry student, Alex Crisman says, "Due to NCAA rules, we had to change from the Indians and since this last April we are now the Warhawks."

As a result of this, the university was without a tangible character to represent their school.

After removal of the Indian, the school was given several different nicknames.

"We were called McMurry nation, which was created by the news, we never actually created that. And then they said maroon and white, well as a student body, how can you rally around that?"

This year they will finally have an official mascot...and today he was revealed.

The Abilene Fire Department showed up to the quad area of the campus at 12 noon today with their sirens blaring.

Stepping out of the engine was none other than the McMurry Warhawk.

Students and faculty cheered in excitement for the new mascot.

For many students, they have been awaiting this moment for years.

"I've been here three years without a mascot," says Crisman.

Senior, Alaisha Guerra, says that as a student athlete she is proud to have been a part of the selection committee because it means a lot to her.

"It's just been a lot of excitement. The whole McMurry community, not just the students, have really grabbed hold of it. We're excited that we finally get to have a Warhawk and we can say Warhawk, and in the stands we can yell Warhawk."
