An inmate who escaped from the Stonewall County jail Sunday is back behind bars.

Texas Rangers and Lubbock Police captured Shannon McDowell in Lubbock shortly after noon Monday.

McDowell escaped from the Stonewall County jail in Aspermont around 3:00 p.m. Sunday.

"When I first found out somebody had escaped, I didn't know how did he get out, where was he, was he hiding in my neighborhood," said Ellen Helscel, who lives in Aspermont.

Word about the escape spread quickly as authorities searched for McDowell.

"We're a small town and everybody was talking back and forth. We figured he wasn't here. That he had already left town as soon as he could," said Roland Martin, who owns a business down the street from the jail.

A spokesman for Lubbock Police said McDowell is being held on two charges: a municipal court warrant out of Lubbock for traffic violations, and a felony theft warrant out of Swisher County.

The escape had many people who live around the jail in Aspermont on edge.

"You never know. There's a lot of kids. Never know what the guy is capable of," said Aspermont resident Clinton Ronk.

There's no word on how McDowell escaped or how he got to Lubbock. Lubbock Police had no background on the charges out of Stonewall County.

Several attempts to reach Stonewall County Sheriff Bill Mullen were not returned.
