Former Abilene Zoo Resident, Inspiration for Popular Book & Movie Dies at 51

Penney, the Kansas City Zoo's oldest elephant at age 51, was sent from the Abilene Zoo to Kansas City as a mate for their big bull elephant Casey in 1971, according to the Kansas City Star. The Kansas City Zoo raised money for the Abilene Zoo to buy a baby elephant, the article states.
The article on KansasCity.com says that along with other elephants from the Kansas City Zoo, Penney was part of the inspiration for the book-turned-movie "Water for Elephants."
