According to the Abilene Economic Index, permits for single-family homes were down 43 percent in 2011, but construction in January has picked up because homes are now selling faster.
"Right now the inventory is flipped and there's a lot less preexisting homes and there's a lot less new construction homes so it allows us to be more competitive against the preexisting home market," says Tim Ellis of Cornerstone Custom Homes.
The average home now sells in six months, which experts say is a good sign for a stable market as home value has increased in the area.
