When the Tye volunteer fire department put out a request for donations, they weren't expecting anything like this.

"Bedding, furniture, including queen size bed with mattresses, two twins for the little ones with mattresses," said Chief Shawn Hicks of the Tye VFD.

All of the donations are for Tye VFD firefighter Jeremy Linn and his family. A house fire claimed their home in north Abilene Sunday night. Everyone got out safely, but the family lost nearly everything.

Four days later, and the donations for the Linns are pouring in. Petsmart even donated hamsters to replace two that were killed in the fire.

"It was just so sweet. Petsmart did a cage, the hamsters, food," said Kellie Reed of the Tye VFD.

The Linns own a house in Tye, but it needs thousands of dollars worth of work in order to be livable. The fire chief is working with different agencies to renovate the home and get it ready for the Linns to live in.

"We're looking at about $3,700 for the contractor to do the work, and that's pretty much just framing. We're going to be sending out donation letters to try and get the material costs covered," Hicks said.

While the Linns still have a long way to go, they're already far ahead of where they were just a few short days ago.

"Every day that passes is getting a little bit better," Hicks said.
