Abilene Residents Thankful For Hay Donated To Help Their Livestock Survive

"I was running short on money. My fiance got diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer and I've been helping him with some of his stuff."
Tracy Davis has had horses as far back as she can remember. But lately, providing for them has been more difficult than ever.
"It's so hard to find hay right now because of the drought. And for someone to give out hay, it's helping a lot of people who really care and look for their animals for them to get some food in for them when they need the help the most," says Davis.
That someone is the local Abilene Animal Services. They received the $250,000 ASPCA grant back in October and have been providing hay to needy equine since.
Davis adds, "It's a relief. It really is. Now that I got some extra help with the hay, it helped out a lot."
Not only is money tight for many but other challenges are posed.
Marshall Anderson, who picked up several bales this afternoon says, "We found that locally, hay was just next to impossible to come by."
Anderson has experienced similar challenges and is thankful for some relief.
He adds, "This is awesome. With the drought and such, we're in such desperate straits."
Davis says, "I would rather go without before my animals do. If it got to where I couldn't take care of them, then I would find new homes for them."
Davis is thankful for the donation from the organization but her horses here are enjoying the donation just a little more.
"It's really amazing that someone was kind enough to offer this grant and these folks worked hard enough to get this grant to help the people of the Big Country," says Anderson.
