West Texas Roughnecks 84 Laredo Rattlesnakes 39 Saturday, April 14
The West Texas Roughnecks held their 2012 home opener from the Ector County Coliseum on Saturday, April 14 against the previously unbeaten Laredo Rattlesnakes. The Roughnecks were searching for production in their offense after starting the year 0-2 and things took a turn for the better with an 84-39 win over Laredo. Both teams started slow in the opening quarter, but the Roughnecks opened things up in the second quarter by outscoring the Rattlesnakes 26-0. Roughnecks wide out Sam Griffin took the game over in the second quarter by recording two touchdown receptions on passes from QB Micah Brown, and returning an interception five yards back for a touchdown. The Roughnecks led at halftime 33-3.
The Roughnecks opened the second-half by extending their lead to 40-3 following a 16-yard touchdown pass from Micah Brown to wide receiver Bernard Luster. Laredo answered with two scores in the third quarter with a three-yard touchdown run from Johna Norcross, and an 18-yard touchdown pass from QB Matt Jeffers to Darnell William to close the gap. However, the Roughnecks would answer with 31 points in the fourth quarter as wide out Bernard Luster recorded two touchdown receptions on passes from QB Matt Parsons, and Jermaine Blakely added a five-yard touchdown run to help the Roughnecks seal their first win. Roughnecks quarterback Micah Brown finished 16 of 28 for 174 yards and four touchdowns as Bernard Luster compiled 10 receptions for 176 yards and four touchdown receptions. Laredo quarterback Matt Jeffers finished 15 of 41 with 184 yards passing, two touchdowns, and three interceptions as Darnell William recorded 10 catches for 135 yards and two touchdown receptions.
The West Texas Roughnecks (1-2) will continue their home-stand next Saturday, April 21 as they host the Rio Grande Valley Magic (1-1). The Laredo Rattlesnakes (2-1) will return home on Sunday, April 22 to play host to the Houston Stallions (1-0).
Corpus Christi Hammerheads 49 Abilene Ruff Riders 32 Saturday, April 14
The Corpus Christi Hammerheads took on the Abilene Ruff Riders on Saturday, April 14 in the first-ever Bounty Bowl played in Snyder, Texas. With a festive crowd on-hand, the Hammerheads captured a win in the exhibition match-up defeating the Abilene Ruff Riders, 49-32. The Bounty Bowl, named because a bounty of $1,000 is paid to the winning team, also featured two country western concerts played before and after the game.
Following a bye week, the Corpus Christi Hammerheads will travel to the Permian Basin as they face the West Texas Roughnecks (1-2) on Saturday, April 28. The Abilene Ruff Riders (1-0) will return home to the Taylor County Expo Center to play host to the Amarillo Venom (1-1) on Saturday, April 21.
