The NCAA Championship Round of 16 match, which began early yesterday afternoon, was stopped due to rain midway through singles. But after action resumed today at 7 a.m., sixth-ranked Hans Hach quickly dispatched Martin Leroy at the top line, 7-5, 6-2, and Alfredo Desiati held on to beat Andre Correa at the No. 4 position, 6-4, 6-4, for the match-clinching point.
Hach has won five-straight matches and is now 23-4 on the season at No. 1 singles, while Desiati is 17-10 overall and 8-2 when competing at the No. 4 spot.
The victory improved the Wildcats' season record to 21-8 and puts them into the NCAA quarterfinals, where they're scheduled to face No. 3 Lynn today at 12 p.m. CT. The Fighting Knights yesterday defeated Western New Mexico, 5-0.
Northern Kentucky, which pulled off a few postseason upsets to reach the NCAA Championships, has its season end at 16-7. Two of those losses were to the Wildcats, who beat them, 6-3, earlier in the year.
ACU led the Norse 3-0 following a sweep of the doubles matches.
Hach and partner Nick Plum scored ACU's first point after doubling up NKU's No. 1 team of Tyler Fraser and Pierce Kohls, 8-4.
Michael Morris and Guilherme Gesser finished second with an 8-6 decision at No. 3 vs. Guillaume Berman and Drew Schroeder.
Desiati and Borja Cortes completed the sweep with a 9-7 win at No. 2 against Leroy and Correa.
