Dyess Air Force Base has issued the following news release regarding the death of an airman at Lake Fort Phantom over the weekend:

An active-duty Airman assigned to the 7th Bomb Wing Security Forces Squadron here drowned Sunday while attempting to swim ashore after his kayak overturned at Fort Phantom Hill Lake.

Airman 1st Class Miguel Villasenor, 26, who resided in Abilene, is survived by his daughter, Aloani Villasenor, who lives in Chicago, Ill., and parents, Jorge and Veronica Villasenor, also of Chicago.

Villasenor was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:25 a.m., said Kathy Lacy, a Dyess casualty notification representative. The safety investigation is ongoing, said Lt. Col Jeffrey Strommer, the 7th Bomb Wing chief of safety.

"The death of Airman 1st Class Miguel Villasenor is a tragic loss for the Dyess community and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and those he served with during this difficult time," said Col. A memorial service for Villasenor will be held at the Dyess AFB chapel Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
