Sherry Campbell was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease two years ago. "I'm new to Parkinson's, so I'm learning from those who have had it for a while", says Campbell.
ACU grad students, along with doctors from Hendrick Medical Center, offer informational sessions, as well as physical therapy and counseling.
"We've had some wonderful physical therapists who have explained the need for stretching and standing up straight to help prevent the progress of the muscles tightening", Campbell tells us.
Darlene Ashby is a friend of Campbell, who has been with her every step of the way.
"She doesn't want anybody feeling sorry for her. The other day we were clearing the table at my house, and these dishes are really heavy, and I said 'Sherry, I don't know if you should lift all that.' and she said, 'Darlene, let me do as much as I can, while I can, as long as I can.' That's her attitude".
Though there is no cure yet for Parkinson's, this group offers a healthy dose of fellowship and encouragement for those who may otherwise feel hopeless.
The hot topics summer workshops cater to the elderly community. For more information, call 325-674-2111or email dlt05a@acu.edu.
