An Abilene woman escaped without injury after an unattended candle started a fire in her house.

The Abilene Fire Department responded to reports of smoke coming from a home in the 1300 block of Sycamore at about 8:00 Monday night.

Crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire and escort the woman to safety. The woman told fire officials that she lit a candle after her electricity went out and left it unattended on a shelf in the hallway.

There were no injuries, and there is currently no estimate on damage to the house.
