APD: Man Charged with Felony DWI After Afternoon Accident

By: Officer George Spindler, APD
Updated: June 15, 2012
Yesterday afternoon at about 4:20, APD Dispatch was notified by a concerned citizen that she had just observed a male motorist hit another motorist's vehicle in the rear-end for the second time. Officer Chris Bisbee was dispatched to this minor collision call in the 4100 block of Buffalo Gap Road. During his investigation, Officer Bisbee smelled the odor of alcohol coming from the male driver that had collided with the other motorist. The driver also had other indicators of intoxication and was given field sobriety tests which he failed. Officer Bisbee conducted a records check and learned that the subject had two prior convictions for driving while intoxicated (DWI). The driver was arrested and taken to county jail where he provided breath samples. Breath samples taken revealed the driver's BAC to be 0.274 and 0.260. Based on his previous convictions for DWI, the driver was charged with an enhanced charge of felony DWI.

Last night at about 7:50, Officer Chris Collins assisted an agent with the Special Operations Division attempt to contact two persons, one of which was known and the other matching the description of an accomplice in a recent crime. The male suspect was the driver of the vehicle. During the attempted contact, the suspect evaded detection and sped away and ran a stop sign and a red traffic signal. Officer Collins disengaged and reported the vehicle's last known direction of travel. The suspect vehicle and suspect were observed moments later as the driver was exiting his vehicle in the 1200 block of North 15th Street. The suspect was arrested and searched. During that search, a pipe containing residue that tested positive for methamphetamine was discovered. The male suspect was charged with evading arrest and possession of methamphetamine.

Last night just before midnight, Officer Chris Collins contacted a male pedestrian in the 900 block of Plum Street. During that contact, the pedestrian identified himself and had a conversation with Officer Collins. After the conversation the pedestrian continued on his way. Officer Collins conducted a records check and it revealed that the pedestrian he had just spoken with had an outstanding warrant. Officer Collins recontacted the pedestrian and advised the man he had a warrant for his arrest. The man immediately ran away from the officer but was taken into custody moments later in the 1000 block of Plum Street. The man was arrested on his felony warrant and for evading arrest.
