A newly licensed teenage driver was able to walk away from a one-vehicle rollover accident Friday afternoon near the Mountain View area of Lake Brownwood on FM 3021.

Shortly before 1:00 p.m., a 16-year-old male traveled only about a mile and a half from his family's home when the red 2001 Chevy Suburban he was driving went out of control and rolled over, striking a tree and landing on its top, according to his parents who were on scene.

The driver only suffered a scratch on his left shoulder and had cactus thorns in his skin from crawling out of the vehicle. According to his parents, the teen was lucky not to be hurt from the mesquite tree which went through the front windshield of the vehicle.

He was able to exit the vehicle on his own, kicking out the driver's side window wearing only one flip flop. The other flip flop came off during the wreck, they said.

The possible cause of the wreck was a broken tie rod, which made the driver lose control of the vehicle.

DPS Trooper Martin Molotsky led the accident investigation and was assisted by Brown County Sheriff's deputies along with Lake Brownwood Bridge Volunteer Fire Department. Guardian EMS was on scene; however the driver did not wish to be transported as his injuries were minor.
