Updated: July 29, 2012
Fast-acting residents saved their homes from being burned after a grass fire sparked in South Abilene Sunday evening.

The fire started in a field behind a neighborhood in the 3800 block of Georgetown Dr. just after 6 p.m.

Neighbors noticed the flames and started wetting down their fences with garden hoses before fire crews arrived.

The grass fire was knocked down fairly quickly.

There was heavy damage to the fences, but no homes were in danger.
